What are the advantages and disadvantages of high-school-age adolescents working part-time jobs during the school year? Include examples in your answer.

Advantages:

1- Obtain useful, marketable skills such as improving their communication, learning how to control people, Expand interview skills and filling out job applications.

2-Gain valuable work experience, which are excellent for a resume.

3-Provide productive use of free time.

4-Learn how to effectively handle finances. Even if you are simply using your income to pay for your expenses, you will learn to budget between clothes and movies.

5-Instill new assuredness, sense of responsibility and liberty.

Disadvantages

1- High rates of absenteeism and less school participation.

2-Less time for homework. Working students sometimes may not be able to make the time to complete their work.

3-Lower grades in school. Students who work more than 20 hours a week have grades point averages that are lower than other students who work for 10 or less hours a week.

4-More likely to use drugs and alcohol. Research suggests that substance abuse is higher for students who work 20 or more hours per week.

5-Increased tension. Balancing work and school can prove to be too much for any student.
