In regards to citizenship, what would Aristotle say about someone today who says the following? “I don’t care about politics. I don’t really follow the news. They’re all crooks anyway.”
Aristotle suggests two things about the quality of a good government, firstly it law abiding citizens and secondly, the goodness of the law that they obey. He also suggests that politics should be comprised of more middle-class people than the poor and the rich in order to balance it. Thus, he brings out the importance of political participation and critically analyse the laws of the land in terms of their virtue or goodness on the common interest. Politics according to Aristotle is not a one-way traffic as happens with the monarchy or traffic jam as happens with the democracy but the balancing of the ruler and the ruled. This would mean one should actively involve oneself in the business of politics in order to be a good citizen and to elect good rulers.
