Describe which schedules of reinforcement produce behavior that is the most resistant, and the least resistant to extinction. give real life example of these different schedules.

Homework Answers

Answer #1
  • Most resistant
It is the 'variable ratio' schedule through which the behavior is most resistant to extinction. In this, the reinforcement is provided at unexpected and unpredictable time and number of responses. For example. a lottery machine is going to give the reward at extremely unpredictable intervals and that is one of the reasons why it is addictive.
  • Least resistant
It is the 'fixed interval' schedule through which the behavior is least resistant to extinction. In this, the reinforcement for the behavior is given at intervals which are already predecided. Get food every five minutes after pressing a button. As the reinforcement is highly predictable, that is also the reason why it is easier to extinguish.

4. A researcher would like to demonstrate how different schedules of reinforcement can influence behavior. Two separate groups of rats are trained to press a bar in order to receive a food pellet. One group is trained using a fixed ratio schedule where the rats receive one pellet for every 10 presses of the bar. The second group is trained using a fixed interval schedule where they receive one pellet for the first bar press that occurs within a 30...
