Authors Linda Sanford and Mary Ellen Donovan (1993) describe the power of self-esteem as follows: "Our level of self-esteem affects virtually everything we think, say and do. It affects how we see the world and our place in it. It affects how others in the world see and treat us. It affects the choices we make--choices about what we do with our lives and with whom we will be involved. It affects our ability to take action to change things that need to be changed." As you reflect on this statement, why do you think it is important to recognize where your level of self-esteem is?
Self-esteem requires that we regard ourselves as worthy individuals, and love, care for and feel proud of ourselves. When we believe that we are valuable and important, our outlook towards life changes and we begin to take good care of ourselves. We are able to make good decisions about ourselves which enhance our value rather than break it down. However, to be able to tread on this positive direction, it is important that we are aware of our level of self-esteem. Particularly for people with lower self-esteem, there is a tendency that they regard themselves as unworthy of happy outcomes or capable of achieving them. If they can recognise their tendencies, there is a greater chance that they work on themselves to become more persistent and resilient in terms of overcoming adversity.
