8. Psychotropic medications are those medications with an intended purpose of changing a person’s mood and/or way of thinking. Many other types of medications also change a person’s mood and/or way of thinking but are not considered psychotropic drugs. What is the difference?
Psychotropic drugs are a loosely defined grouping of agents that have effects on psychological functions. They are all compounds that affect the functioning of the mind through pharmacological action on the central nervous system. Changes in person’s mood or thought as a result of consuming other medications are generally side-effects. However in case of psychotropic drugs such as antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, antianxiety agents and antidepressants, changing the mood and way of thinking is the intended primary effect.
