What is assimilationism and pluralism? What impact does a high rate of immigration have on personal identity and culture in the United States? What are the pros and cons?
Assimilation is a process in which formerly distinct and separate groups come to share a common culture and merge together socially. As a society undergoes assimilation, differences among groups decrease. The assimilation model is also known as the “melting pot”, that stresses society coming to together to form a common set of standards. Pluralism, on the other hand, exists when groups maintain their individual identities. It recognizes and allows group differences. Pluralism does not imply that individuals separate into their own groups but emphasises that differences in lifestyles and languages among groups should be appreciated and maintained.
