Michael, Sara, and Devon are in a really heated discussion about the ideology of oppression when it comes to race, class, and gender. You are only an ear shot away of their conversation and fortunately for the, you are a student studying social inequality. You hear comments such as sex and gender are the same thing, boys will be boys, girls will be girls, and girls are the weaker sex. You enter the conversation and give great sociological perspective on viewpoints heard. Express your comments.
Firstly sex and gender are not the same thing
Sex refers to the biological attributes of a human that defines them on the basis of their physiology. It is defining a man on the basis of their genitalia which they were born with and differentiates them from a woman
Gender is a much more complex topic as it is the social and cultural roles associated with the societal norms, rules and regulations related to being a man and a woman and how it one supposed to carry themselves in the society.
A person can be biologically born as a male but later on identify with the female gender or vice versa. Gender is a choice concept as it is what one chooses to be.
A person can have aligning sex and gender as when a biologically female identifies with the female gender and same goes for a man who was born a male and identifies with the male gender
