According to Pierce the opposite of belief is doubt.

He pegged down the vital difference by saying that belief is the precursor of our desires and as a consequence our code of conduct, whereas doubt is the complete antithesis of that innate nature, it is an inhibitory force that propels us to question.

According to Pierce the most valuable method of fixing belief is scientific investigation, as he is of the opinions that the method is based in logical reasoning and is based in attempts of fact finding, withkugh following the prima face values that the other methods comply to, of emotions and or authority.
