Any perspective on an issue that is different from the one you harbor is an alternative perspective. Usually assessing alternative perspective are a good practice at understanding a topic through various angles, that in turn given a more in depth structure to the topic.
In this case active thinking helps. Active thinking is an involved form of thinking that attempts at questioning every angle and reaching the conclusion on one's own accord as opposed to talking infromation from an external source and believing it as true.
This helps come out of the insular world of one's perspective and gives the ability to analyze the issue critically and objectively. The parochial way to approach an issue is generally incomplete and doesn't give the desired results - as it is blinded and bounded by one's alresdy established preconceived notions and beliefs.
