People develop their identity in line with their racial and ethnic values, practices and customs. This would mean that they would feel proud about belonging to their racial or ethnic group. Thus, people would associate themselves positively and would try to attach themselves with that. The problem with this identification is that whether one feels positively or negatively depends on the standing of that race or ethnicity in the society. For example, in the American society while the white people take pride and feel positively about their identity, the black community and the African Americans while identifying themselves with their own cultures, they would also experience shame and negative association because of their accumulated disadvantage in the society.
