How does Milgram use his work to explain some of the behavior exhibited in the Vietnam war?
16) Appendix I: Was Milgram's work ethical in terms of professional scientific conduct? Were the "benefits" obtained from his work enough to offset the "costs"? Were subjects truly debriefed at the end of their participation?
From the results of the experiment, Milgram concluded that human beings, in general, tend to obey perceived authority figures. He further stated that individualistic traits did not appear to explain why heinous crimes were carried out by individuals at the command of authority figures. Perfectly decent, American men were told to shoot civilians during the Vietnam War and they did. Although they did not accept their actions morally, they still obeyed. This proves that obedience to authority does not only affect evil men.
