Do you need counseling theory to be an effective counselor? Why or why not? How do you suppose the practice of professional counseling would change without the use of theory? Provide an example to support your response.
Theories related to counseling and psychotherapy helps in establishing a framework for the therapists/counselors to interpret their clients' behavior, feelings, thoughts, etc. It also helps them navigate through different cases and throughout their journey. It serves as a roadmap for new counselors and therapists. It provides a conduit for research. Theory helps us to master nature and learn more about things that we already know about.
Without the use of theory, there would be no roadmap for counselors, no previous knowledge of others to build upon their own knowledge, there would be no room for any research as theories provide the groundwork for research to take place. If there are no theories professional counseling will become useless as there are no theories on which the counselor's knowledge is based upon which is extremely dangerous for clients coming to such counselors
