Tsutsui defines popular culture as a combination of anime (animation), hello kitty and manga (comic books). He came up with this and combines a historical approach to the evolution of Japanese pop from the fields of politics, anthropology, visual arts and literature. Over the years he found that Japan had a lot to offer because there was such a huge database of knowledge in anime and manga but everything was in Japanes. Therefore he translated it to English so everyone around the world could read it. This is pecific to Japan and can not be applied to other countries because this started in Japan.
