In thinking about Mary (a female), a psychologist would tend to view Mary's gender role as being comprised of both masculine and feminine characteristics.
Everyone in the world have the characteristics of both masculine and feminine and it’s the dominant characteristics that would make one male or female. Females would have the feminine characteristic of care, empathy, love, mercy, tolerance etc. while males would have courage, protective, exploring, independency, freedom etc. as their dominant characteristics. Thus, a psychologist would look for all the characteristics Mary might have in order to have a holistic approach.
