Answer #1

the independent variable

If a researcher wanted to see if people in a good mood are more likely to assist others who need help, he or she could set up a situation where a participant would find a dollar on the ground, then see if that person helped somebody in need. In this study, finding the money would be the independent variable.

This is because it is the independent variable which is manipulated by the researcher. The effects of manipulating the independent variable are observed on the dependent variable. This is the manner in which conclusions and inferences are drawn from the experiment.

How Grounded Is Your Love Life? In a recent experiment, psychologists at University of Pittsburgh and the University of Waterloo in Canada decided to examine stability, turbulence and love. The researchers focused on stability because it is a term that has both literal and abstract meanings. 1. A researcher hypothesized that facial pain would be a good indicator of degree of severity of refractory rhinosinusitis (a sinus infection). Patients who had been diagnosed with refractory rhinosinusitis were recruited to participate in the study.  All participants were asked to complete a pain questionnaire prior to CT scans of their sinuses.  Sinus scans were then rated by an independent neuroradiologist and were scored using the Lund-McKay, Harvard, and Kennedy staging systems for rhinosinusitis. No relationship was found to exist between...

As you saw from the lab PowerPoint slides last week, you will be doing a research study looking at ‘Aggression Priming” for your first paper. For this week’s discussion, I want you to discuss with your group what you think this study is about. What is the hypothesis? What theory does it come from? What do you predict will happen (do you expect something different than the hypothesis in the researcher instructions? If so, what and why?)? Do you think...

What is the main idea of the article? I belong to that classification of people known as wives. I am A Wife. And, not altogether incidentally, I am a mother. Not too long ago a male friend of mine appeared on the scene fresh from a recent divorce. He had one child, who is, of course, with his ex-wife. He is obviously looking for another wife. As I thought about him while I was ironing one evening, it suddenly occurred...
