I would say that both environmental and biological factors combine to influence drug intake behaviour. The biology plays a role in terms of predisposing an individual to be more vulnerable to drug use. For instance, studies have consistently shown that impulsivity, risk-taking, sensation seeking etc. are some common traits that are linked to drug use. Additionally, many individuals with psychological illnesses such as depression and anxiety can also abuse drugs as a self-medication strategy.

Coming to the role played by environmental factors, they act upon the individual in different ways. For instance, peer pressure and exposure to drug use are highly implicated with influencing drug use. The environment also has a role to play to safeguard the individual against drug use by utlizing effective awareness and intervention programs.
