Irradiation was referred to as spilling over in Pavlovian Theory. It is said that irradiation takes place during generalization. It is a physiological process in which the conditioned area irradiated or spilled over to other areas of brain which is the cause of generalization. This process permitted the brain to elicit similar Conditioned Responses to similar types of Conditioned Stimulus. For example, if someone is conditioned for fear of one type of insect, it gets generalized to all other types of insects. This causes similar conditioned response of withdrawal, panicking or screaming to any or all of the insects.
