  1. What do anthropologist mean by saying that race is a social construct? Be specific and cite sources?
  2. Since race is a social construct, why do some people still believe that certain "races" of people are better at certain things? For example, I have heard people say "white" men can't jump, and thus they are not good at basketball? Why do we argue that skin color determines behavior when there is no evidence? Be sure to cite resources.
  3. Even though as a scientific concept race is not terribly significant it still is used by many people to explain differences. As your book notes on page 299, "race still remains important to understand from a social perspective." So, even though the majority of scientists believe race is a myth and an illusion, why does "race" still matter? Be sure to cite sources.

ANS- Race is a social construct, it is not biological. There is no gene to there is no cluster of genes that is not common for blacks and whites. A person who is considered black in the United States can be considered white in Brazil or he can be considered as colored in South Africa. Social construct means constructed by society, so racism is constructed or made by society only, it has not in the blood of an individual, people learn to have the thinking of racism from others only and this chain prevails.
