A functionalist is likely to argue that deviance is beneficial to society. The functionalist would believe that deviance plays an imporant role in the society. Deviance helps the people to identify the normal behavior, which is accepted in the society, and helps to create the norms by which people have adhere to. It gives the people information on what is acceptable and what is not, and what conistitutes deviance. These norms serve the prupose of people identifying themselves and the deviants as diffrent groups of people and serves to understand their deviant behavior.
