What is the difference between instrumental value and intrinsic value? How does Malcolm Budd view the value of art? What about Robert Stecker? For both philosophers, indicate whether they think the value of art is instrumental or intrinsic. Then, say at least one reason or argument they make in support of their conclusion.

  • Intrinsic value is something valued for its own sake for example was wisdom, pleasure, the, health, and friendship. Instrumental value serves as a means to some end that we value in and of itself for example money, going to school and making good grades, getting married, go on a trip.
  • Intrinsic value  means that the Arts are a part of life, and should not be viewed as a separate thing to be enjoyed (or not) as an "add on." It means that once a society gets beyond dealing with its very basic survival (i.e. food, shelter and clothing), it will engage in some kind of creative act that we now refer to as "Art."
