Answer #1

The video starts by presenting a statement that merely 7% of communication between human beings take place through words. This means nonverbal aspects occupy a significantly large portion of our communication. From this video, it became immediately apparent in what forms non-verbal communication can accompany verbal interaction. The two aspects supplement each other and give a message its full meaning. Non-verbal communication can repeat the spoken message, contradict the message that individual is trying to convey, emphasise the message, use it as a substitute or complement words to clearly put across a message.

A TED talk that I found to be quite helpful with usingbody language to our advantage can be found in the following link:

Describe how the message was sent, the nature of the receiver’s breakdown, and how the sender repaired the breakdown. As we have discussed in the class, nonverbal codes have many functions including reinforcing, replacing or contradicting the verbal message. They can also regulate interactions, create immediacy and deceive. There are a large variety of nonverbal cues (some that you might not have considered before such as artifacts, environment and silence). Being aware of nonverbal codes is important to effective communication when being the sender of the message, the receiver, or even being an observer of communication. Therefore, for the...
