PHILOSOPHY

6. Lisa has become very cold. She can hardly walk out of bed. Lisa's friend Jasmin advises her to drink a tea made of birch leaves, which according to Jasmin himself often healed her own colds. To their surprise, Lisa becomes healthy after drinking birch leaves for just three days. She therefore thanks Jasmin and states that the birch tree tea has cured the cold. Does Lisa have a good reason to draw this conclusion? Is her conclusion reasonable? Use the science theories you think are relevant and make suggestions on how Lisa could better do the investigation.

7. Read the aliens from Alice in Wonderland where Alice meets Klumpedumpe (a talking egg).

a) Explain how Alice views the meaning of an expression here. Why do they misunderstand each other? Use some of the theories you read about in the language philosophy section.

-Here I have a question for you. How old did you say you were?

Alice counted, and then said,

-Seven years and six months.

-Wrong! Exclaimed Klumpedume triumphant. You have not said a word in that way.

"I thought you meant how old I was," explained Alice.

"If I had said that, I would have said that," said Klumpedumpe.

b) What determines the meaning of a concept according to Klumpedumpe, and how can you describe his way of reasoning based on language philosophical theories and concepts? Explain in detail how you arrive onto your answer, and discuss the problems that could arise if his theory would be true.

-It proves that it's three hundred and twenty-four days when you can get non-birthday presents.
"That's right," said Alice.
- And only one when you can get birthday presents. There you have honor.
"I do not understand what you mean by" honor, "said Alice.
"Of course, you can not do that - until I talk about it for you. I meant "there you have a truly convincing reason"!
-But "honor" does not mean "a truly convincing reason", invoked Alice.
When I use a word, Klumpedumpe said in quite loud tone, that means just what I want it to mean - neither more nor less.
"But the question is," said Alice, if one could get a word to mean different things.
"The question is," said Klumpedumpe, who decides. As simple as that.
