A group of researchers wants to test which methods are most effective in smoking cessation among pregnant women and decide upon two different interventions. They place an advertisement to recruit pregnant women who are attempting to quit smoking. They then randomly assign women to three different groups: those who go cold turkey (experimental group 1), those who consult with a health-professional and go over the pamphlet (experimental group 2), and those asked to simply discuss their smoking pattern (control group). Random assignment assuming that the spread of individual differences across the groups is similar. Each group of women is given a different intervention program, along with a control group sticking with the original. All of the groups are tested, in the end, to determine which intervention delivered the most improvement.
