Sermon is from Mattew 4:1-15, Mattew 5:1-48
Citing specific evidence from the Sermon, did the Sermon describe an ethical religion, i.e. a religion that required an individual to follow a code of moral behavior?
Chapter 4 in Matthew describes the temptation of Christ by Satan and how he overcomes it and chapter 5 sets the fundamental practices one should follow in order to be a complete human being. Satan tempts Jesus by offering him comfort and material possession which Jesus overcame by condemning and driving the Satan away. Jesus thus inspires people not to lose their integrity in times of temptation. Chapter 5 as it is fondly called as Sermon on the Mount clearly shows the path to a happy and content life. It talks about the negative impacts of anger, lust, divorce, unnecessary oaths, retaliation and treating enemies. He also touches upon the poor, suffering, innocent, peacemaking and righteousness etc. All these are basics of ethical thoughts and behaviors needed for an individual who belongs to a religion.
