Only a small amount of the energy used in an incandescent light bulb (regular bulbs commonly used in households) is actually converted into light. What happens to the rest of the energy? How more efficient light bulbs (LEDs for example) are able to waste less energy?

Answer #1

Incandescent Light Bulb works on the Principle of Heating Effect of current, where Resistance offered by the filament converts Electrical Energy to Heat Energy. When heated up, light become visible, and therefore Bulb glows, in whcih very small ammount of Energy is used as Light Energy, Rest Energy gets unused as Heat Eenrgy.

LED Bulbs are working on Semiconductor Diode Device, where when Electron jumps from high Energy to low Energy Level (called Energy gap), energy is released as photon, and phenomenon happens inside the device, and therefore most of the Energy appears as Light Energy

Compact fluorescent bulbs are much more efficient at producing light than are ordinary incandescent bulbs. They initially cost much more, but last far longer and use much less electricity. According to one study of these bulbs, a compact bulb that produces as much light as a 100 W incandescent bulb uses only 23.0 W of power. The compact bulb lasts 1.00×104 hours, on the average, and costs $12.00, whereas the incandescent bulb costs only 76.0 ¢, but lasts just 750...

An old-fashioned incandescent light bulb rated at 60 W might have the same brightness as a compact fluorescent bulb that is rated at only 14 W. How is this possible? (Hint: think about what happens when the bulbs are left on for a very long time and about other ways energy can get used.)
