A 100 gram bullet is fired at an angle of 75 degrees above the the horizontal from the top of a 45 meter tall building with a speed of 60 m/s. Assume no air resistance acts on the bullet and take zero gravitational potential energy to be at ground level.

A) What is the height of the bullet, measured above the ground, when 40% of the bullet’s total energy is kinetic energy?

B) What is the greatest amount of gravitational potential energy of the bullet?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Find the height required using the total energy of bullet at the point of launch which will be constant due to absence of air resistance as shown below. Potential energy is highest when kinetic energy is lowest which happens when speed of bullet is lowest which happens at maximum height where only horizontal component of velocity remains.
