In a rectangular coordinate system a charge of 25 X 10- coul is placed at the origin of coordinates, and a charge of -25 X 10-9 coul is placed at the point x = 6 m, y = O. What is the electric intensity at (a) x = 3 m, y=0; (b) x=3, y=4?

Answer #1

__________________________

The charge at origin (0, 0) is q1 = 25*10^-9C

The charge at point (6 ,0) is q2 =-25*10^-9C

__________________________

(a)

The potential at point r = (x,y) = (3,0)

the distance from q1 r1 = √(3)^2 = 3

and for q2 is √(6-3)^2 = 3

then the potential

   U = kq1/r1 + kq2/r2

      = k[ q1/r1 + q2/r2]

      = k/3m [ 2 5*10^-9 - 25*10^-9]

      = 0

__________________________

(b)

The potential at point (3,4)

then r1 =√ (3-0)^2 + (4-0)^2 = 5m

and r2 = √(6 - 3)^2 + (0-4)^2 = 5m

Therefore the potential at this point

U = 0
