The speed of sound in steel is about 4.5 km/s. A steel rail is struck with a hammer, and an observer 0.21 km away has one ear to the rail.

(a) How much time will elapse from the time the sound is heard through the rail until the time it is heard through the air? Assume that the air temperature is 20°C and that no wind is blowing. s

(b) How much time would elapse if the wind were blowing toward the observer at 23 km/h from where the rail was struck? s

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a).The speed of sound in air at 200 C is 343m/sec.

Hence time taken by the sound to reach the observer in air =

Hence time taken by the sound to reach the observer in steel =

Hence time gap = 0.612-0.046 = 0.566 sec.

b).Since wind is blowing towards obeserver,

then new speed of sound through air is = 343+6.38 = 349.38 m/sec. (as 23km/hr= 6.38 m/sesc)

Hence

Hence time taken by the sound to reach the observer in air

Hence time gap = 0.601-0.046 = 0.555 sec.

A sound wave travels at 345 m/s in air and 5.9 km/s in steel. A train sounds off its whistle twice: Once at 8:55am and another at 9:00am just before leaving the station. A group of train robbers about 7.4 km away heard the first whistle sound in the air and put their ears to the rails to hear the second whistle. A rail gun is a ‘futuristic’ device that uses an electromagnetic coil to launch a magnet by running a current up the coil and creating a magnetic field that exerts an accelerating force on the magnet, which is inside the coil. Starting values: magnet’s mass is 1.00 kg; rail gun length is 3.00 m; gravitational acceleration at Earth's surface is 9.81 m/s2. A muon is a type of unstable subatomic particle. When high-speed particles from outer space (sometimes called "cosmic rays") collide with atoms in the upper atmosphere, they can create muons which travel toward the Earth. Suppose a muon created in the atmosphere travels at a speed of 0.941c toward the Earth's surface for a distance of 3.48 km, as measured by a stationary observer on Earth, before decaying into other particles. (a) As measured by the stationary observer on Earth,...

4. A pilot flying from Honolulu to California flies at an airspeed of 300.0 m/s (“airspeed” = airplane’s speed through the surrounding air) with her airplane pointed 70.0˚ to the east of north. However, the air itself is moving with a 50.0-m/s windspeed blowing due east. When the pilot adds together the two vectors of her airspeed and the windspeed, she gets her groundspeed: the airplane’s actual velocity relative to the ground below.
