Two long straight parallel wires of length L carry currents of I1 and I2 in opposite directions. The force between them is

a) attractive

b) repulsive

c)zero

d) inversly proportional to L

?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

In the attached Figure, we consider two long straight parallel wires carrying currents and in the opposite direction.

Wire #2 will experience a magnetic field due to wire #1 in the direction indicated.
The direction of indicated shows that wire #2 will be repelled from wire #1. In a similar manner, one can show that wire #1 will experience a force due to the magnetic field of wire #2, and that this force will have a magnitude equal to that of but opposite in direction. Thus, wire #1 will be repelled away from wire #2.
