The water level in a vertical glass tube 1.60 m long can be adjusted to any position in the tube. A tuning fork vibrating at 503 Hz is held just over the open top end of the tube, to set up a standing wave of sound in the air-filled top portion of the tube. (That air-filled top portion acts as a tube with one end closed and the other end open.)

(a) For how many different positions of the water level will sound from the fork set up resonance in the tube's air-filled portion?

(b) What is the least water height in the tube for resonance to occur?

(c) What is the second least water heights in the tube for resonance to occur?

A 40-cm-long tube has a 40-cm-long insert that can be pulled in and out. A vibrating tuning fork is held next to the tube. As the insert is slowly pulled out, the sound from the tuning fork creates standing waves in the tube when the total length L is 41.4cm ,55.2cm , and 69.0cm . What is the frequency of the tuning fork? The air temperature is 20?C.

A two-meter long pipe filled with water is open at one end and closed at the other. You have at your disposal a tuning fork with a frequency of 250 Hz and a noise meter (a device to measure the intensity of a sound in decibel). Using the tuning fork, you lower the water level until you hear the first three resonances. The first, second, and third resonances are at 0.35m, 1.05m and 1.75m respectively. At the same time, your...
