If I kick a soccer ball (from the ground), and it reaches a height of 45 meters, for how long would it be on the air before it hits the ground (HINT: The distance and time going up should be the same as when going down )?

Answer #1

initial speed u of ball is obtained from the following equation of motion

" v2 = u2 - 2 g h "

where v is final speed that is zero when reaches maximum height h and g is acceleration due to gravity.

If the ball reaches maximum height 45 m, then initial speed u is calculated as

Time to reach maximum height = u/g = 29.7/9.8 = 3.03 s

Since it takes equal time from maximum height to reach ground,

time duration of the ball in air = 2 3.03 = 6.06 s
