When an unpolarized light with intensity Io passes through a polarizer ,it polarizes the light and and intensity of light becomes Io/2 after transmitting the polarizer.

When a polarized light with intensity Io passes through a polarizer its intensity after transmitting is given by relation

I = Io (cos)^2

where is the angle between polarization axis of polarizer and the line along which light is polarized.

By measuring the transmitted intensity we differentiate whether light was unpolarized or polarized.
