Explain what would happen if there were a net torque acting on the system.

Explain what would happen if there were a net torque acting on the system.

Answer #1

Hello Buddy!

Net torque is called as the sum of all individual torques acting on a system. Torque measures how much rotational force is acting on the system. If the sum of all the torques is zero, the object is said to be in rotational equilibrium.

But if the net torque is of a said value, then the sign indicates what direction the net torque is acting in, according to a sign convention.

The basic idea is that equivalent forces (torques) cancel each other in opposite directions and the torque adds up on either direction.

On which ever direction, torque is more, there will be a postive displacement in that direction.

2. Does the fulcrum contribute any torque to the system? Does the weight of the meter stick contribute and torque to the system? If the fulcrum were shifted past the center of mass of the meter stick, say, to the right, would the fulcrum then exert a torque about a point of contact between it and the meter stick? Would the weight of the meter stick exert a torque about that same point?
