You are trying to move a chair of mass 29.0 kg by pushing it horizontally along the floor, but it is not sliding very easily. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the chair and the floor is 0.700.What if the angle is 75.0 degrees from the horizontal?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Here 2 cases are possible either you apply force at 75° above horizontal or apply force at 75° below horizontal.

In both cases you would not be able to move the chair if the magnitude of force is same but in first case you are making it even more difficult to slide as the vertical component of force will add to increase normal force and hence increases overall friction force whereas in case 2 the normal force and hence friction force is reduced as vertical component of applied force is in opposite direction of normal.

If at same angle you increase applied force it is possible to move chair more easy in case 2 as compared to case 1

After a hard day's work, you return home and decide to clean your apartment. In order to do so, you need to move your bed which has a mass of 110 kg. You exert a horizontal force of 270 N and your bed refuses to move. You roll up your sleeves and keep pushing until you exert a horizontal force 540 N. The bed slides a little but now you are exhausted and stop pushing. You have an aha! moment...

Suppose you have to move a heavy crate of weight 875 N by sliding it along a horizontal concrete floor. You push the crate to the right with a horizontal force of magnitude 300 N, but friction prevents the crate from sliding. You are trying to drag a heavy sleeper-sofa across your floor. The sofa has a mass of 150 kg and the coefficient of static friction between the couch and the floor is 1.08. Being a bright physics student, you realize that you can make this easier by pulling upwards and forwards at the same time rather that just pulling the sofa forwards. If you pull on the sofa at an angle 32? above the horizontal how much force does it...
