3. Light of wavelength 550 nm is incident on a diffraction grating that is 1 cm wide and has 1000 slits. What is the dispersion of the m=2 line?

I believe the answer is 2.0 x 10^5 rad/m, however, haven't been able to get that as an answer.
I believe i'm supposed to start with the Dispersion equation D= (Change in theta / Change in Lambda) = m/(dcos(theta)).

Any direction is helpful, thank you!

Answer #1

Slit width, d = a / N = 1*10-2 / 1000

d = 10-5 m

d*sin = m

10-5 sin = 2*550*10-9

sin  = 0.110

= 6.3 deg

Dispersion D = /

/ = m / dcos

so, D = 2 / 10-5 * cos (6.3)

D 2*105 rad/m
