Calculate the work being done by the force of gravity on an object weighing 2.4kg as it drops a distance of 1.2m near thte surface of the earth. Answer in SI units and show work.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Given,

Mass of the object, m = 2.4kg

Distance moved, S = 1.2m

Work done is given by,

Where,

F is the force

S is the displacement of the object

is the angle between F and S.

Here the force on the body is due to gravitation which is equal to the weight of the body. Therefore,

F = mg = 2.4 x 9.8 = 23.52N

Since gravitational force and displacement are acting in the downward direction towards earth, the angle between them is zero. Hence

= 0

Therefore,
