Work done is defined as product of the force and the distance over which the force is applied. Work is done when a force is applied to an object and the object is moved through a distance. For example, when you lift a load you are applying a force over a distance so you are doing work.
When we ask a random person on a street, he says that it is some form of thing which does not keep him at rest, but busy. which also implies the above statement. he says that he uses his energy to accomplish is work. "energy----->work" ======>work energy theorem. eg. walking for 2 km
