"From a free-body diagram, the direction of motion of an object can be determined."
Free body diagram illustrates different forces acting on a given object. It helps in finding the net force ( magnitude as well as direction). Hence net acceleration of the object can be found using free body diagram. But the final motion of the object depends upon the other variables also, like magnitude and direction of initial speed and time for which net acceleration is acting. So free body diagram do give the exact direction of net acceleration but, in general, it can't clearly indicate direction of motion without other required variables.
