Fishing line is threaded through straw and secured to two chairs ten ft apart. Balloon blown up and taped to straw. add some mass to the system by taping metal washers to the guide straw and repeat the experiment. how does this change the motion of the assembly? how does this change the fbd. Force, weight, gravity
Experimental Procedure
Position two chairs of the same height about 10 feet apart and grab a piece of string. Tie one end of the string to one of chair. Next, get a straight plastic drinking straw. If the straw is one of the “bendy” straws with the flexible piece, cut off the flexible part so we are left with a straight straw. Place two pieces of tape on the straw. Thread the string through the straw. Tie the loose end of a string to the back of our second chair and make sure the string is tight. Blow up the balloon and hold the end so the air can’t escape and use the two pieces of tape to secure the balloon to straw. Move the straw and balloon to one end of the string.
How Does the Experiment Work?
As the air is released out of the balloon in one direction, then the force propels the balloon in other direction. The result is that a balloon flying across the string like a rocket.
