An object 2.00 cm high is placed 12.0 cm in front of a mirror with radius of curvature of 8.00 cm.

(a) Suppose the mirror is a convex mirror. Determine the focal length of the mirror, and use a scale drawing to measure the image distance, its magnification, image height, and if the image is real or virtual.

(b) For the mirror in part (a), calculate the image distance, its magnification, image height, and if the image is real or virtual using the mirror equations.

(c) Suppose the mirror is a concave mirror. Determine the focal length of the mirror, and use a scale drawing to measure the image distance, its magnification, image height, and if the image is real or virtual.

(d) For the mirror in part (c), calculate the image distance, its magnification, image height, and if the image is real or virtual using the mirror equations.

Answer #1

b)

using mirror formula

1/f = 1/v + 1/u

1/4 = 1/v - 1/12

v = 3 cm

magnification

m = 3/12 = 0.25

imgae height

h' = 2* 0.25 = 0.5 cm

image property : virtual, erect amd diminished

====

d)

using mirror formula

1/f = 1/v + 1/u

- 1/4 = 1/ v - 1/12

v = 6 cm

magnification

m = - v/u = 6/12 = - 0.5

height of the image

h' = h v / u = 2* 6 / 12 = 1 cm

image is real, inverted and diminished
