Three billiard balls, all having a mass of 0.170 kg, collide on a horizontal, table. Prior to the collision the red ball is traveling to the right at 1.50 m/s, the green ball is traveling ‘upwards and left’ (45o) at 1.20 m/s, and the yellow ball is traveling ‘downwards’ (90o) towards the crash site at 2.0 m/s. After the collision, both the red and yellow balls are stopped, and the green ball goes off at some velocity. Draw the before and after sketches of this collision scenario. Define your coordinate system. Show how to determine the final velocity, speed, and direction of the green ball immediately after the collision. Show how to determine the change in the kinetic energy of this system. Explain where this energy came from or went.

A cue ball (mass = 0.170 kg) is at rest on a frictionless pool table. The ball is hit dead center by a pool stick, which applies an impulse of +1.20 N · s to the ball. The ball then slides along the table and makes an elastic head-on collision with a second ball of equal mass that is initially at rest. Find the velocity of the second ball just after it is struck. ? m/s
