Answer #1

A large box sits on a rough floor. A person pushes on the box with a horizontal force of magnitude 50 N. The box remains at rest. What is the magnitude of the friction force?

As the box remains at rest, the horizontal force is not enough to overcome the static friction force which is opposite to the direction of the horizontal external force of 50 N.

Therefore from Newton's second law, the friction nforce is equal to the external force of 50 N.

Answer is 50 N.
