In a classroom demonstration, the pressure inside a soft drink can is suddenly reduced to essentially zero

Assuming the can to be a cylinder with a height of 10 cm and a diameter of 6.4 cm , find the net inward force exerted on the vertical sides of the can due to atmospheric pressure.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution:

Given,

h = 10 cm. = 0.10m.
D = 6.4 cm. = 0.064 m.
Pressure on can sides, assuming 1000 kg/m3 drink density:

1/2 (1000 *9.81 x 0.10 m) = 490.5 Pa.

Pressure from air = 101,325 Pa.

Pressure difference = (101325 - 490.5 ) = 100834.5 Pa.

Area of can sides = ( D*h) = 0.020 m2.

Net inward force on vertical sides = (pa) = (100834.5*0.020) = 2027.4 N.
