(b) If you are below the surface of a still pond on which a 0.001 mm thickness of oil (n = 1.25) is floating, what, if any, colors will be enhanced in the sunlight from directly overhead?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

We know that For Oil, n = 1.25

For water, n = 1.3,

Since Oil is floating with thickness of 0.001 mm over water,

As per Law of Refraction, When sunlight passes through Oil over the surface of water, Both Refraction and Reflection will happen within the oil film and because of sunlight, Colors get seperated and gives Colors of Rainbow ( VIBGYOR ).

In addition to that depends upon the distance travelled by light rays, two types of interference will happen,

1. Constructive Interference ( if light rays reinforce each other from multiple spots)

2. Destructive Interference ( if light rays cancel each other).

a thin layer of oil (n = 1.38) on the ocean surface for thousands of miles. As an inspector, you are flying over the ocean surface in an aircraft, looking at a section of option where the oil thickness is 563 nanometers thick. You look straight down at the ocean, at a time of day when the sun is directly above you. a) So, if constructive interference occurs (i.e. where the reflection is brightest) what is the wavelength(s) of visible...
