You are at the top of a lighthouse that is located 30 m above the water. You spot a boat out on the water approaching you at a constant speed. At one moment, the boat is located at an angle of 30° below the horizon. One minute later, the boat is located at an angle of 40° below the horizon.

1. How far was the boat from the base of the lighthouse when it was at 30°? How about 40°? How far did the boat travel over that one minute?

An osprey drops a fish from an unknown height above the water. The osprey was flying at 12 m/s at an angle of 30 degrees below the horizontal at the moment the fish dropped from its grasp as shown in Figure 5. 2.5 seconds later the fish hits the water. The choice of a coordinate system is arbitrary, but for this problem use the coordinate system shown with the y axis going vertically upward and the x axis with the...

A bathtub spigot in a top floor apartment lies 20 m above street level, where water is pumped into the apartment building. The pipe that leads into the building has an inner radius of 0.57 cm , which tapers to 0.40 cm at the bathtub spigot opening. The speed of the water leaving the spigot is 12 m/s . (The density of water is 1000 kg/m 3 .) Assume the water flows without viscosity. (a) What is the speed of...

You are in a boat traveling perpendicular to waves in water. The wave speed is 8.20 m/s, your speed is 6.80 m/s, and you are heading into the waves. If the wavelength of the waves is 8.20 m, how much time passes between hitting the top of one wave and the next? [This Doppler effect in water is just like that in sound; you can also calculate it from velocities and length.] __________ s

Chinook salmon are able to move upstream faster by jumping out of the water periodically; this behavior is called porpoising. Suppose a salmon swimming in still water jumps out of the water with a speed of 6.26 m/s at an angle of 40°, sails through the air a distance L before returning to the water, and then swims a distance L under water at a speed of 3.54 m/s before beginning another porpoising maneuver. Determine the average speed of the...
