Which of the following is not an important consideration for thin-film interference?

Select one:
a. Light beams traveling along paths of different lengths can develop a phase offset
b. Light beams traveling through media of different indexes of refraction can develop a phase offset
c. The thickness of the thin-film must be on the order of the wavelength of light
d. Reflection at an interface can cause a phase shift of pi/2

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Interference pattern is generated because of phase difference developed in light Rays(beams) as they travels different lengths in different medium . The thickness of film is also relevant as for a thick film coherency of beam is lost producing a weak or no interference pattern.( So option A,B,C are all relevant) .

Option D). Would have been relevant if caused phase shift mentioned of pi instead of pi/2 .

Due to reflection from a medium of higher refractive index light beam experience a phase shift of pi (. 180Degrees) not pi/2(90 degrees).

Ans ) option D

puddle of water has an oily thin film floating on it. A beam of light is shining perpendicular on the film. Red light with wavelength 600[nm] is incident from air (n = 1.0) onto a thin film of index n = 1.5. The thin film coats a thick slab of material which has index n = 2.0.   1: For what minimum film thickness would the thin film produce no significant overall reflection due to destructive interference? 2: Did the reflections off of those two interfaces have the same phase change (both 0º or both 180º)? Or did the reflections off of...

Two identical horizontal sheets of glass have a thin film of air of thickness t between them. The glass has refractive index 1.40. The thickness t of the air layer can be varied. Light with wavelength λ in air is at normal incidence onto the top of the air film. There is constructive interference between the light reflected at the top and bottom surfaces of the air film when its thickness is 700 nm. For the same wavelength of light...
