Consider a Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG) of a certain spacecraft which uses

238 over 94 Pu in the form of plutonium oxide (???2) as the radioactive source. The radioactive

source contains 2.38 kg of ???2 for which the faction of 238 over 94 in ???2 is 0.9 at the launch

of the spacecraft. The thermal energy absorbed per radioactive decay of 238 over 94 by the

container is 5.5 MeV and the half-life of 238 over 94 is 97.7 years.

(a) Find the initial activity of the radioisotope source at the launch?

(b) Find the activity of the radioisotope source by the end of the ten years mission of the

spacecraft?

(c) How long will it take to become the activity (1/64) from the initial activity?

(d) A thermoelectric generator converts the thermal energy absorbed by the container

into useful electric energy. If the efficiency of this conversion is 7%, find the electric

power in the RTG at the launch?
