A flexible-fuel vehicle averages 26 mpg when fueled with gasoline. What would the average mpg-rating be for the vehicle when fueled with E85 (85% ethanol + 15% gasoline, by volume)? Assume that the fuel energy conversion efficiency is the same for both fuels.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A flexible-fuel vehicle averages 26 mpg when fueled with gasoline. That means the vehicle can run 26 miles per gallon of gasoline.

Now we use E85 (85% ethanol + 15% gasoline, by volume). We have to calculate the mpg rating. This we have to find out how many miles the vehicle can go if we use one gallon of E85.

We have given that the fuel conversion efficiency of ethanol and gasoline is the same. So we are not going to get any difference in the mpg rating. The mpg rating of the vehicle will remain the same as before 26 mpg.

This is because both ethanol and gasoline are not going to provide different mileage per gasoline since their efficiency is the same.

A manufacturer developed a flexible-fuel vehicle (FFV), which runs 25 mpg on gasoline and 15 mpg on ethanol. Does it meet the CAFE fuel efficiency obligation of a minimum 27.5 mpg? CAFE fuel efficiency for FFV is calculated based on the assumption of 50% mileage on gasoline and 50% on ethanol, and 1 gal ethanol is equivalent to 0.15 gal gasoline.

For storage options a, b, and c, what volume of storage tank for hydrogen would be needed for a hydrogen fuel cell car to have the same delivered transport energy (that is, total vehicle-km of travel) as a conventional car with a full 50 litre petrol tank (note that the actual volume of the tank is more than 50 litre). a- If the hydrogen is stored as compressed gas at a pressure of 350 bar (1 bar = 101 kPa)...

Fueling Indonesians: Window of Opportunity or Regret? Kerosene is widely used as cooking fuel by Indonesian households, with an annual usage of 10 million Kiloliters. It is a major subsidized fuel for household cooking, where its usage is over sixty percent of the 230 million population. The subsidy program costs the government heavily, where it amounts up to U.S.$4 billion a year. As the practice tends to bleed government expenditures quite heavily, the Indonesian government is embarking on a change...
