A ball rolls up a ramp to a maximum height and then stops momentarily before rolling back down the ramp.

Consider the following two systems.

System 1: A system consisting of just the particle

System 2: A system consisting of the particle and the earth

Which of the following statements is correct?

  1. The earth does work on System 1 which changes its total energy.
  2. The earth does work on System 2 which changes its total energy.
  3. The gravitational potential energy of System 1 increases.

The correct answer is given as "I only". Does not the position of the particle on the Y axis increase though making III also true?

Answer #1

Answer:- the correct statement is:-

The earth does work on System 1 which changes its total energy.

Explanation:- Only option 'I' is the correct statement because when only the ball is considered as the system, then Earth's Force becomes external force and so it will do some work on the system and change its total energy.

Also, in entire course of motion of the ball, it's potential energy first increases and then starts decreasing as it falls from the maximum height reached. So statement 'III' is not correct.

In a spring gun system, a spring with a spring force constant 370 N/m  , is compressed 0.13 m . When fired, 79.1% of the elastic potential energy stored in the spring is eventually converted into kinetic energy of a 5.50×10−2 kg uniform ball that is rolling without slipping at the base of a ramp. The ball continues to roll without slipping up the ramp with 90.3 % of the kinetic energy at the bottom converted into an increase in gravitational...
