Two Electrodes are placed in a calcium chloride solution and a potential difference is maintained between them. If 8.20 x 10^16 Ca 2+ ions and 6.30 x 10^16 Cl- ions per second move in opposite directions through an imaginary area between the electrodes, what is the current in the solution?
positive ion will create current in the direction of its movement and negative ions moving will create current in the opposite direction of their movement.
so net charge movement will be in the same direction i.e. in the direction of movement of positive ions.
total charge moving in the solution=(8.2*10^16*2+6.3*10^16*1)=2.27*10^17
then net charge magnitude=2.27*10^17*1.6*10^(-19)=0.0363 C
current=charge/time=0.0363 C/1 seconds=0.0363 A
hence current in the solution is 0.0363 A.
